First steps: getting your UK PS3 online
It’s all going smoothly so far. Having plugged in the PS3 and connected it to my TV, it’s up and running. And rather than dive straight into MotorStorm (as tempting as that is), I’m sorting out all the internet stuff.
Getting it online was a piece of cake. It detected my home Wi-Fi network first time (admittedly, the PS3 is sitting next to the router), and after entering the WEP key, it all worked tickety boo. After testing the connection, it told me I need to get a System Update.
As expected, PS3 is shipping with Firmware 1.50 here in the UK - I just checked. On the same info screen, it says my console has 47GB free on the hard drive, out of an available 55GB. So that’s 12GB of operating system gubbins, presumably.
Downloading the 1.60 firmware took about four minutes (I’m on a 2Mbps Virgin Media broadband connection), plus about another four minutes to then install it, before the console restarts.
All the online options are under the Network bit of the XMB, including the internet browser, the PlayStation Store, the Folding@home application, and Remote Play (the PSP download stuff, I think).
