No PS3 Lara or Hitman until 2008?

Art_02.jpgPS3 users will probably have to wait a while for Lara and the hitman codenamed 47, according to Eidos (full story here at gamesindustry.biz). In a statement released with the company's 6-month interim report, CEO Jane Kavanagh said that “as we do not believe that the installed base will be high enough until the second half of our 2008 financial year, most of our major product releases on the PlayStation 3 platform are not scheduled before that date." Apparently, Eidos feel they can shift more copies when even more people have got the PS3.

While it’s disappointing to hear that both series probably aren’t going to appear on the PS3 for some time, it may actually be for the best. The Hitman games have all followed a very similar formula, a formula that needs to be rejigged for a proper next-gen release. The same goes for the Tomb Radier series: although Legend was an improvement on the awful Angel of Darkness, it didn’t go far enough. Although it was good fun to play, it still felt like a second-rate Prince of Persia rather than a good game in its own right. Maybe the longer development time will give designers enough time to make both titles truly next-gen.
