Eidos to wait until 8 million PS3s sold?
Eidos may not want to release games for the PS3 anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have faith in the platform. In a report by MCV, Eidos CFO Rob Murphy stated that “We have absolutely no doubt that PS3 will be a very successful platform and we’re completely behind it.” He went on to say “ideally, we would like to have a market that is a worldwide installed base of eight to ten million PS3 units by the time we bring out our big products. But we’ll have to assess how that moves.”
This would give the PS3 a higher user base than the Xbox 360, which, as MCV points out, Parker Consulting puts at over 8 million. It’s understandable that Eidos are being more cautious with their release strategy: next-gen games cost a packet to make, and they don’t want to release now when they could make more in a year’s time. If the PS3 install base gets that high, then Sony have got a good chance of attracting more of those elusive exclusives to sell the platform. The PS3 will have to prove its qualities as a console for that to happen. What it needs is a few blockbusters. Perhaps in September?
