Endwar details emerge- will it actually be a *good* console RTS?
I’m quietly hopeful that Endwar might be the first PS3 strategy game not to suck. More details emerged concerning it today, courtesy of US mag Electronic Gaming Monthly (via CVG). The game’s going to feature three main factions: the US Joint Strike Force, the European Enforcers and the Russian Spetsnaz. Each side has a distinct campaign and everything in the game is destructible. The camera’s also closer to the action and the game has a cap of 12 squads in the game.
It’s the last two points that give me hope. RTS games on consoles can work well, as long as publishers take advantage of the controllers. The sixaxis probably won’t be very handy when it comes to jumping in between loads of different production queues and units, but could work well controlling small numbers of squads. If combined with a good camera, there's no reason that control couldn't be even more intuitive than the standard PC setup. The game’s also headed by the ex-Creative Assembly Michael de Plater. Creative Assembly, best known for their Total War games, were responsible for some of the finest moments in PC strategy gaming. Lets hope he continues his trend on the PS3.
