PS3 Home Beta sign-ups reach US and Canada, but what about ours?
Some jammy sods across the pond have just started getting their PS3 Home beta invites, giving them the opportunity to sign up and try Sony’s intriguing Web/Game 2.0 service. Invites appear to have come via email allowing recipients to put their name down for a chance to get into the beta and are currently restricted to residents of the US and Canada only. You have to be over 18 to get in as well, so it is possible there will be some kind of non-disclosure agreement in place, which may prevent any deeper insight into the service from being published before it reaches it a finalised status.
I think that betas tend to be better than the final version when it comes to this sort of thing – mainly because the community is a lot closer knit when you’re all in there learning the ropes at the same time. I remember the World of Warcraft beta far more fondly than the retail version. Going gold spoiled it for me. PS3 Home is obviously a bit different to an MMO, so that’s some consolation, but I’m still upset that it looks like residents of Europe aren’t going to be allowed into the system early.
This seems to imply there is going to be some kind of regionalisation of the service – hopefully that doesn’t also mean that we won’t be able to access PS3 Home spaces of other users in, say, the US because that would be a real shame. Meanwhile we’ll just have to keep an eye on the Home beta website for further updates.
