Switch allows bypass of PS3 Blu-ray HDCP

PS3HDMI.jpgA gadget called the Gameswitch PS3-S201 will let you connect and run your PS3 in high-def via DVI on a non-HDCP certified monitor. As Kotaku points out, you could potentially hook up the gameswitch to an input and record high definition content at full resolution. However, because DVI is video only, you’d have to record the audio separately. Also, Blu-ray discs are huge, and recording and storing that amount of content would be tricky. Still, it might be a useful little tool for PS3 users with a non-HDCP monitor.

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but I don’t think that Sony have much to worry about yet in terms of naughty users using the switch for internet movie piracy. Not a lot of people have Blu-Ray recorders yet, and even if people did record and post copies of Blu-Ray movies on the internet, the files would be so huge that the download times would be pretty astronomical.
