Lucasarts affirms support for 3rd party devs, new IPs

Fracture.jpgWhile announcing Fracture at an event yesterday, Lucasarts President Jim Ward declared the company’s support to new IPs and 3rd party developers, as reported by IGN. He admitted that although a lot of successful original IPs had been established in the 90s, the company had sort of ‘lost it’ recently. He reportedly said that we wanted LucasArts to be known for more than Indiana Jones and Star Wars games. However, that's not to say that the two mega-franchises aren't going to get attention from LucasArts: along with new IPs, Indiana Jones and Star Wars, unsurprisingly, will be priorities for the company.

I’ve always thought that LucasArts were one of the better publishing companies and it’s refreshing to see a company both admitting that it’s not being as original as well as trying to remedy this by establishing some new IPs. Sequels and franchise games are a safer bet for publishers, particularly for one like LucasArts with the almighty power of Star Wars and Indiana Jones in its corner. Innovation, however, does not often stem from sequels, with game designers often playing it safe and resorting to using tried and tested game mechanics. The more new original IPs we see, the better. Having said that, is there any chance of seeing a next-gen Full Throttle 2? Please?
