A recent financial report released by Konami seems to suggest that we'll see the next Metal Gear Solid game by the end of March of 2008, as reported by Joystiq. At the end of Konami’s fiscal year (on the 31st of March, 2008), the company expects that “new titles will also continue to be released for game consoles in widespread use, along with the long awaited Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3."

I wouldn't be surprised if Metal Gear Solid 4 was held back for some additional polishing: it's Konami's flagship franchise. Sony’s also got a heck of a lot riding on MGS4. It’s going to have to really, really good if the company expects to legitimate the higher cost of the PS3 to Metal Gear Solid enthusiasts.
