Nintendo claim Japanese top twenty

Mario.jpgOK, given that the Wii console has been outselling the PS3 in Japan by quite a bit, it was a fair bet that PS3 software wasn’t selling that well. It's still bad news for Sony though, that according to a recent story published in Gamasutra, the latest Japanese charts from over the 'Golden Week' series of public holidays show that games for the Wii and DS dominate the top twenty, with not a single PS3 game in the top thirty. Just how bad is this for Sony?

Sony’s influence in their home country has definitely taken a hit with the PS3. The PS2 did well in Japan mostly because of developers like Konami, Capcom and Square Enix, who released a lot of the PS2’s defining titles: games like Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Soild 2 and Devil May Cry. However as it stands, Sony has lost some support from Capcom, with the developer making content exclusive to the Xbox 360 and going multiplatform with Devil May Cry 4. Final Fantasy XIII looks set to appear on other platforms, with only Hideo Kojima of Konami seemingly continuing his support for the PS3. With the loss of exclusive developer support and the success of Nintendo, Sony’s position in Japan is looking increasingly tenuous.
