THQ making multiplatform RPG

THQ.jpgOut of all the game genres, the lack of good PS3 RPGs is what hurts the platform most for me. So it’s welcome news that THQ are announcing a new multiplatform RPG tomorrow, with developer Big Huge Games, according to IGN. Games designer Ken Rolston, who was involved in making Morrowind and Oblivion, will participate as Lead Designer and the game’s set for a 2009 release.

Oblivion was a good sandbox RPG. Sure, the plot was a bit weak, but the game excelled at creating a living world that you felt you were a part of. I think sandbox games could really come into their own on this generation, as the processing power of consoles is enough to handle really large, open-ended games. Oblivion showed that RPGs on consoles didn’t have to rely on scripted events and I suspect this next effort from THQ will be the same. The problem is getting a trade-off between having a compelling story and a degree of interactivity. It’s a trade-off that only a handful of RPGs have made successfully so far.
