Burnout Dominator ad banned
Following last week’s high profile banning of Manhunt 2, another video game has been hit with censorship. Fortunately, this time it isn’t a full game – just the advert for EA’s Burnout: Dominator which the Advertising Standards Agency decided “was likely to cause serious or widespread offence.” The ad was called up because it was felt that images of the trashed car and the reference to violence might condone a violent lifestyle.
In Burnout: Dominator’s defence, it is a game pretty much entirely orientated around crashing cars but perhaps the slogan “inner piece through outer violence” went a bit far. I mean, I can really see how involving my car in a high speed collision might give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Presumably, all EA has to do to get the approval now is add a small ‘Please drive responsibly’ footnote at the bottom, which is how alcohol companies get around encouraging us to drink ourselves stupid every time there’s a film on the telly...
