The Tekken series is going online for the first time, with news that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is getting a downloadable add-on. The expanded game will allow ranked matches, custom battles and online tournaments. You’ll also be able to watch other people fight while waiting in a lobby area, which has support for voice chat. An online news ticker is also being added, that will keep players up-to-date with weekly, monthly and overall rank leaders. The update also includes couple of new single-player modes: Practice and Survival. The download is getting a US release later this year, where it’s going for $9.99 if you've already downloaded Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, or $19.99 for a full copy of the game including the update.

The downloadable version of Tekken was defeinitely one of the stronger offerings of the PS3 store and it's the type of content I'd like to see more of. Whilst downloadable games are typically geared towards casual gaming, it's refreshing to see an offering that appeals to more die-hard gamers. I hope Tekken 6 features some decent online content.
