PSP firmware update unlocks CPU power

corner_focus.jpgThe 3.5 firmware update for PSP will remove the 266 MHz software cap on the processor, Sony has confirmed to gamesindustry.biz. Programmers will now be able to code games running at the full 333MHz, at the cost of reduced battery life. It’s worth noting that this won’t retroactively affect games, but will allow future games to take advantage of this increased speed.

While I guess it might come in handy for parts of games that need a little extra processing punch, I can’t help but feel that this update’s not what the handheld needs. The PSP’s problem was never its graphical ability, but its short battery life. I'm not sure that worsening an already bad battery problem with the PSP is worth the graphical boost. Still, if those rumoured PSP specs for the next model are correct, perhaps battery life won’t be as much of an issue.
