Activision overtakes EA to become top-grossing 3rd party publisher
Activision has become the top-grossing third party publisher in the US for the first half of 2007 and is the the first publisher this decade to overtake mega-publisher EA. According to the NPD Group, Activision’s sales hit 397.8 million US dollars between January and June, mostly due to the success of Guitar Hero, compared to EA's 365.7 million US dollars.
I think EA’s John Riccitello was right: people are getting tired of the same old sequels coming out over and over again. It's telling that Activision’s success seems to primarily come not from one of their established franchises such as Tony Hawks, Spider-Man or Call of Duty, but from a new, more innovative gaming series. Given this latest piece of news and Riccitello's admission that repetitive sequels aren't the way to go, I'm looking forward to seeing how EA try to compete with Activision in the future.
