Fallout 3 details surface on the web
Details of the upcoming, PS3-bound Fallout 3 have hit the web. At a recent press showing with Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard, as reported over at next-gen.biz, it was revealed that that you’ll begin the game as a baby in the post-nuclear world. Starting off in the unopened vault 101, you’ll be able to choose between seven different attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck, collectively known as S.P.E.C.I.A.L.. Your character will also age as time advances.
As with previous instalments of the game, you can expect to see a fair bit of gore, with Howard stating that “Violence done well is f**kin’ hilarious, so we embrace it.” The game will operate a targeting system called V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) that allows you to freeze time and target specific body parts on your foes. Probably most encouraging for me are the reports that Bethesda is making Fallout 3 more character-driven than Oblivion.
Oblivion was a fantastic technical accomplishment, but I felt that its open-endedness came at a cost. The characters and the plot, while epic, weren’t always that original or gripping. Oblivion’s rather sparse and simplistic dialogue options certainly didn’t help affairs. One of the Fallout series’ greatest strengths was its ability to get you to interact with the characters in the world. I’m hoping that we’ll see that return in Fallout 3. That trailer was very promising.
