GTA IV production still "a week or two behind" on PS3 says Rockstar

The latest round of previews of Grand Theft Auto IV have been rolling out through the intertubes. Unsurprisingly, Rockstar’s most ambitious GTA to date has been getting some seriously glowing reports from all those lucky enough to get a close up look at the early builds of the game. It is no secret, however, that the Xbox 360 is getting the best of the hype at the moment as there haven’t yet been any sightings of the game running on the PS3. Part of the reason might be that the game is “a week or two behind” the 360 version according to Rockstar.

Taken on its own, this isn’t a particular cause for worry and isn't really all that surprising at this stage in development. However, it is looking increasingly like Sony has got the short end of the stick with the title; Microsoft has secured exclusive rights to downloadable content for the game (at a reported cost of $50 million) - a fact that led one Rockstar rep to make the controversial assertion that “if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose”. Check out our sister-blog Xboxer for the full story.

It’s not all doom and gloom though – the same rep was also keen to point out that "They're identical games. […] We make great games for people to enjoy on whichever system they want”. None the less, the fact remains that if you haven’t yet bought a next-gen console and want to play the latest iteration of GTA, the best console to do it on is the 360, which will be offering more cop-fleeing, ho-bashing, cap-popping goodness than PS3 players can hope to get.

In the end, GTA IV is probably going to shift a lot of 360 consoles, but will have to make do as a nothing more than a decent addition to the PS3 line-up.
