Activision on Guitar Hero versus Rock Band
Activision Senior VP of Marketing Bill Kassoy spoke to website Next Generation about the upcoming Guitar Hero III, a Red Octane (a subsidiary of Activision) published title soon to face competition from EA's Rock band, a title from ex-Guitar Hero devs Harmonix. “Don’t underestimate Red Octane’s hardware,” Kassay said. He went on to say that Harmonix only had software development experience, suggesting that the hardware and software combination might not prove a match for the proven experience that Guitar Hero offers. He underlined the price difference between the two games, stating that Rock Band would cost several times more, when you took into account all the extra peripherals for the game.
Rock Band’s got a lot of potential, but the price of the peripherals is going to be one to watch. Still, a good online mode might overcome a few of these problems. If you can go on multiplayer and play with people who use other peripherals, then this would presumably cut down on the need to splash out on the complete accessory kit personally. Rock Band's extra instruments will be an interesting experiment and of course the game might be a little less polished as a result of these new elements. But if the core experience is original and good, a few rough edges in the game will be forgiveable.
