LittleBigPlanet almost ready to go, Beta imminent

PSN has a fairly lengthy hands-on preview of the intriguing part-platformer, part-Game 2.0 title, LittleBigPlanet. For those already convinced that this is going to be the PS3’s killer title, the big news is that the beta looks set to start in just a couple of months time, with the full game being fairly close to finished. We’re taking an educated guess that the best way to get involved in the beta would be to get your name down in Sony’s Gamer Advisory Panel, which is how a lot of the Home invites were distributed.

The preview also reveals some more tantalising details about what the game will be like when you’re not just designing wacky levels to share with your friends. There is a single player mode, complete with story-line, that is being planned. But it looks like puzzle-solving teamwork is still the main focus, with a strong emphasis on interaction. This in turn can be enhanced by your character’s mood (changing between happy, sad, angry or frown and controlled by the D-Pad) which affects as the way your character moves about the screen. You can also lean left and right by tilting the Sixaxis and slap other players by jerking it downwards.

Aside from the childlike appeal of mass slap fights, this will be a part of the PvP mode that takes the form of a race to collect all the sponges and reach the finish line. You’ll be able to slow up your opponent with a healthy smack to the back of the head or by lobbing junk at them over your shoulder.
