PS3 sales in Japan top 1 million

ps3_console07.jpgEx-Microsoft exec, Peter Moore, might have had some less than complimentary things to say about the PS3’s success in Japan, but clearly the console isn’t struggling as badly as the Xbox 360 camp might have hoped. The PS3 has just passed the 1 million unit sales mark – an important milestone for the console – according to magazine publisher (think Famitsū) Enterbrain.

Enterbrain has previously blown the whistle on Sony’s struggle to compete with the Nintendo Wii in Japan, reporting last month that the smaller, lower priced console was outselling it more than six-to-one. These latest statistics are definitely a bit more promising. Make no mistake though – the PS3 is still lagging a long way behind the Wii, which had took a quarter of the time to reach the 1 million sales mark and is currently dominating with nearly 3 million units sold.

Sony will be taking some comfort from the fact that the Xbox 360 has only managed a paltry 420,705 sales despite Microsoft’s best efforts to appeal to the discerning market.

But the PS3 is still suffering from a severe games deficiency, so I guess it is pretty good going to have even broken the 1 million sales barrier at all. When long-hyped titles like Lair, Heavenly Sword and Warhawk start hitting shelves, it will be interesting to see if the PS3 can start to close the gap with the Wii.
