PSP firmware upgraded to 3.52
Sneaking in at the same time as the PS3 firmware upgrade, Sony has introduced another new firmware for the PlayStation Portable. We’re cynical about the benefits of Sony’s minor tweaks to the PS3, but the console’s new custom backgrounds and disc eject function feel like a gift from on high compared to what the PSP update is offering.
PSP Firmware 3.52 includes a new security update, just to keep those pesky hackers on their toes. Its other stellar feature is that the number of PSN games it can play has been increased. Not that that corresponds with any further games actually becoming available on the network yet though.
It’s fair enough that the PSP is further through its life cycle than the PS3, so most of the really good updates have been and gone. But it seems to me that when a new firmware comes out for the PS3, it actually offers something that will be visibly different on your console – usually for the better. Conversely, when the PSP gets updated, it’s only there to disrupt the efforts of very small minority of modders.
News of potential fresh PSN titles is encouraging, but they have so far only trickled on to the network in drips and drabs, especially here in the UK, with little to get really excited about – it’s about time for some a serious amount of fresh content and decent games don’t you think? What happened to the enhanced PSP-PS3 interoperability? Where’s our Wake-On-LAN functionality got to? And why are we still using UMDs?
