TV Tuner peripheral launching alongside remodelled PSP

When the new low-fat PSP launches in September, Sony will also be launching a new peripheral to go with it – the TV Tuner. Like the camera and GPS attachments, the TV Tuner attaches to the USB port at the top.

It will receive digital terrestrial channels via Japan’s 1seg broadcasting service, which unfortunately rules out any chance of importing it – although, while we’re still languishing in the depths of another Big Brother summer, the chance to stare at a completely blank screen could only be a marked improvement on our normal viewing choices.

Actually, even in Japan the signal quality looks set to be a bone of contention as the 1seg service was already rolled out on mobile phones early last year and has been criticised for frequently dropping the signal and suffering poor performance when in a moving vehicle, which is where it is most useful.

The price is set ¥6,980 (around £28). One complaint – aside from the fact that the best place to use it is in your own home, tucked up on the sofa, probably right in front of an ordinary TV – is that it’s a fairly hefty looking attachment, but maybe that’s just highlighting how much bulk has been cut out of the new PSP model. Presumably there’s no real reason why it wouldn’t work with the older PSP models as well.
