Leipzig Games Convention: PSPs wireless comms package announced

psp_gocam%20KA.jpgSony has announced that its PSP communications package entitled ‘Go!Messenger’ will be getting the all clear to launch in January.

Sony has worked on this technology with BT, which lets you use a wireless broadband connection to contact other PSP owners. By downloading a small application provided as part of a future firmware upgrade, you will be able to IM each other when connected via Wi-Fi using an on-screen keyboard. There’s a good selection of options, we’ll be fair and say as you can simply get a headset to voice chat, or if you also get the Go!Cam, you’ll be able to have free video chats. It’s basically like Skype or MSN on the move – all you need is a wireless connection.

This is a good idea, but is it a practical one - Would you use this package for example? It just feels a little superfluous in our opinion; a cool and quirky idea, but something people will continue to use, or just a fad. Either way, perhaps it will be good for Sony; helping to get through to consumers that the company is trying to offer convergent products that allow you to do so much from one machine. Lets hope the message starts to get through.
