Muppet of the week - Electronics Arts
Yes, double kudos goes to EA this week as the company has been caught out twice – how impressive!
The first EA boo boo came in the form of touching up their screenshots a little too heavily. We accept in the industry that it’s occasionally done just to make things look crisper and shinier etc, but just plain altering the image to make a game look better than it is isn’t fair. As you can see from the screen from EA’s NBA Live 08 there’s been some heavy alterations and airbrushing – for example, the guy on the back left seems to be half rubbed out. Whoops. These type of screenshots are known as ‘Bullshots’, and well, EA got caught in the act.![]()
But it doesn’t end there. EA offered up another classic faux pas this week when one of its staffers got ‘caught’ editing Electronic Arts’ Wikipedia entry. Website Shacknews discovered that an alleged IP address within a range registered to EA’s Redwood City headquarters had removed several references to founder Trip Hawkins, in addition to removing negative entries focusing on controversial business practices and the publisher's previous attitude to its workers.
It all seems very odd to us, but EA hasn’t made any comments on the Wiki changes, which have now been changed by the community, returning to a semblance of the original entry.
Still, we think EA is most worthy of the muppet award this week – unless you think there’s someone out there that’s surpassed them?
