Muppet of the week - Paramount
Yup, it looks like we’re focusing on the stupidity of the multinationals this month, and this week’s Muppet award has to go to Paramount for turning their back on Blu-ray. Why God, Why?!
Well, the answer is money, of course. As we reported a few days ago, it seems Paramount was given a hefty fee to move over to supporting HD-DVD exclusively, but with a time cap in place; if Blu-ray is still kicking ass in 18 months time, then the company can put its entire back catalogue onto the Sony-positive format.
It does seem a very odd move for Paramount to make since Blu-ray really is coming out roses at the moment, but as they’ve secured an escape route for 18 month’s time, you can guess that there are some wealthy suits chuckling evilly in their high-rise office over rinsing $150m from the HD-DVD backers.
But do Sony and the other Blu-ray supporters have anything to really worry about, or is Paramount jumping ship just a blip in their plan towards global next-gen DVD domination? We reckon Blu-ray will still win out, and it’ll be our turn to chuckle when Paramount sheepishly trundle back to the Blu-ray camp next year with its tail between its legs.
