Analysts expect 80GB PS3 price drop for Christmas

michael_pachter_wedbush.jpgAlthough Sony hasn’t stated anything either way, analysts still strongly believe that the Japanese giant will lower the PS3’s US 80GB price by $100 before Christmas this year.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter from Wedbush Morgan said this week: "We note that Sony recently acknowledged that it will no longer produce its 60GB PS3, and we expect the price of the 80GB PS3 to be reduced to $499 before the holidays, maintaining a premium SKU at that price point," Pachter of Wedbush Morgan has stated.

Currently, the 80GB model retails at $599, and the 60GB model was cut to $499.

Pachter began his prediction earlier this year when he stated that he believed Sony would cut the price of the 80GB PS3 down to $499 once the supply of 60GB units had run dry. Now this has happened, he’s reminding the industry that the price cut is imminent.

In addition, as reported on Gamasutra, Pachter also added that Sony could "again be in a position to cut the price of the PS3 in early 2008 when blockbuster games Grand Theft Auto IV and PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 will launch." Perhaps this will be when Europe finally gets its own price cut. We can only hope, eh.
