EA reveals Dead Space - because there's never enough survival horror out there
EA has unveiled a brand new IP for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It is billed as a third-person survival horror, which is a bold move considering that this puts up against two console big guns, Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Dead Space has one key difference though: it is set in space (read: excuse for no big open environments). Still, this ain’t exactly terra incognita for gaming, but putting cynicism aside for a moment, the brief description from EA sounds promising enough:
“Set in the cold blackness of deep space, the atmosphere is soaked with a feeling of tension, dread and sheer terror. In Dead Space, players step into the role of engineer Isaac Clarke – an ordinary man on a seemingly routine mission to fix the communications systems aboard a deep space mining ship. It is not long before Isaac awakes to a living nightmare when he learns that the ship’s crew has been ravaged by a vicious alien infestation. He must fight through the dead silence and darkness of deep space to stay alive,” reads the first press release.
It’s too early to make any further speculation, although from a couple of screenshots (courtesy of CVG) it looks a lot like Doom 3 at the moment. And one of the enemies looks suspiciously like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.’s bloodsuckers. But I’m glad to see that EA is setting its mind to new IPs rather than sticking to the tried and tested cycle of endless sequels. Incidentally, there's Dead Space website going up, but was unavailable at the time of writing. Expect lots of flash and little actual information.
