Rumour: Resident Evil 5 isn't actually set in Africa...

…It’s Haiti, or so says some unconfirmed reports circling the interwebs. And if that’s true, well, hats off to Capcom for keeping their cool, especially with all the kafuffle started by those recent accusations of racism. Of course, even if that is the case, shooting virtual Haitians is no more or less acceptable than shooting Africans, but it is mightily amusing what a little bit of idle assumption can lead to.

As Kotaku points out, Haiti is a pretty logical choice of locale for a new Resi title, given that Haiti is the spiritual home of the zombie. Alas, this is going to stay as rumour because Capcom have maintained their silence on the topic, and given that Resident Evil games have never really made any mention of their setting in anything but the most general terms, it is possible that we may never really know for sure, especially if those racism fears don’t die down.
