The Console Shooter World Cup: Round 2, Sony

The second round of the console shooter world cup is upon us- if you missed on the first round you can take a look here. The going's getting trickier as we start to move into some of the top shooters that we've had for PSOne, PS2 and PS3. Who will prevail? Read on to find out what happens when Metal Gear Solid goes head to head with PC classic Deus Ex...

cod3_black.jpgCall of Duty 3 (PS2) vs Black (PS2)

Old school FPS action, versus hectic, shoot-bloody-everything exploits in Black. Call of Duty 3 might just have the edge in terms of visuals and overall aesthetics, but isn’t anyone else bored sick by WWII games now? Actually it looks like the CoD team has finally had enough as the fourth iteration is finally leaving WWII where it should be left – in the past. Conversely Black took to the stage with a whole new angle on video games. Okay, the angle wasn’t that original – see how much manic action can be packed into each minute of gaming – but by ‘eck it was absolute rawk fun filled gameplay that sees enemies left scattered in your wake by the hundreds. That's enough to win the tie for us.
Winner: Black

XIII_timesplitters2.jpgXIII (PS2) vs TimeSplitters 2 (PS2)

XIII might have the advantage when it comes to long term single player addictiveness, perhaps by virtue of, y’know, bothering to include an actual story. However it is let down by those frustrating difficulty spikes. That’s not to say TimeSplitters 2 didn’t have me spitting red hot fury at the screen from time to time, but that was when collecting those gold rewards and deep down I was hating myself for my clumsy ham-fists, not the developer for deliberately pissing me off. While XIII wins the single-player battle, it’s the multiplayer that really defines the TimeSplitters experience and in that it is unparalleled, plus you can and will keep going back to it time and time again.
Winner: Timesplitters 2

timecrisis_gpolice.jpgTime Crisis (PSOne) vs G Police (PSOne)

A total mismatch surely – Time Crisis’ static on rail action should be easily eclipsed by G Police’s enthralling storyline, right? G Police has tonnes more freedom, and even allows you to meander away from the well trodden story based path with masses of ease. Time Crisis plotline can only fight back with its endless string of cheesy lines. And yet, somehow, Time Crisis, for all it’s repetitive gameplay, bollocks script and only three types of enemies (blue guys who suck, red guys who can shoot straight and evil milk men who toss ‘nades at you), still has that ageless charm. I put it down to the G-Con action that gives it the edge.
Winner: Time Crisis

metalgear_deusex.jpgMetal Gear Solid (PSOne) vs Deus Ex (PS2)

The battle of the real big hitters, pitting outrageous conspiracy-driven story lines against even more outrageous conspiracy-driven story lines. Metal Gear Solid has an edge on the gameplay as this is a large part of what made it such a hit on the PSOne.
While Deus Ex’s JC Denton can sneak it up as easily as Snake, the slightly more comprehensible storyline gives it an advantage – they’re both politically charged and thoughtful. It’s a very tough call, but realistically Metal Gear Solid has to win thanks to its sheer stunning greatness (and it's helped by the fact that later sequels didn't stink). If this was the PC version of Deus Ex we were talking about though, it might have been a very different story…
Winner: Metal Gear Solid
