Australian retailers confirm 40GB PS3

PS3_40GB.jpgA selection of Aussie retailers have added to the speculation that Sony will be introducing a new entry-level PS3 next week. One website down under has revealed that retailers JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman have each confirmed that they expecting the new SKU to arrive shortly. The new model comes with a 40GB hard drive, just two USB ports (rather than none as the earliest rumours indicated) and no Flash card readers.

To be honest, once Sony started firmly denying these rumours we knew that its arrival almost inevitable. And rest assured Sony absolutely won’t be making the announcement next week on so-called Big Bang Friday. Perhaps we should now be calling it Squeaky Pop Friday instead? The price of the 40GB PS3 is expected to be AUS$699, which also matches up neatly to the anticipated £299 price tag we’re anticipating over here.

Dropping the card readers, 20GB of disc space and a couple of USB ports doesn’t quite seem to equate to a £125 price drop though. I’m wondering if we should we also be expecting a 60GB model price cut as well – that would certainly add a bit more explosiveness to the announcement…
