Blacksite: Area 51 features axed, PS3 version not up to par?

Blacksite: Area 51 is one of those games that is in serious danger of getting overlooked in the upcoming winter release madness. That’s probably because it’s an FPS not-quite-sequel to a rubbish arcade shooter (Time Crisis FTW!) and frankly Halo 3 and Resistance: Fall of Man really have all your generic alien murdering needs well covered on their respective platforms.

For all that though, the various trailers and Xbox Live demo do promise a sound title – the Unreal Engine is strutting its stuff with the usual graphical aplomb, the squad mechanic sensibly takes a nod from Rainbow Six (one button solves all) and despite it’s B-movie feel it looks like it might come up with the goods in the story.

However, one thing that’s not going to help it in its bid for a Xmas victory is the last-minute removal of features, specifically online co-op. Not disastrous news itself – sometimes it’s just nice to play a game with your mate sat next to you – however, I’m surprised that Midway are content to axe something that popular just to keep gunning for the November release, especially when so many other games are there to tempt players away.

PS3 players are allowed to feel a little more disgruntled; an IGN preview reveals that the PS3 version is losing separate ranked and unranked multiplayer matches and a neat VoIP feature that lets you hear opposing players only when they're in close proximity. Boo. Hiss.
