Ex-Guitar Hero developer ridicules the power of the PS3
Different developers seem perfectly happy to comment on the PS3 potential – or lack of – at a moments notice. But for once, Jason Booth, formally of the hard rockers and creators of the Guitar Hero series at Harmonix has come out and damned the PS3 via a quite vicious blog post.
First, he disagrees with the usual fanboy statement of the PS3 being better graphically than the Xbox 360. Apparently, both the fill rate, and shader processing are both much slower on the PS3 than the 360, meaning that the PS3 has “roughly half the pixel pushing power.”
Blu ray is next, with Booth claiming that getting data off a blur ray disc takes abut twice the time that the same date could be nabbed off an Xbox 360 DVD disc. Which would indeed mean much, much longer loading times.
Booth seems ridiculously eager to criticise the PS3, while heap praise on the Xbox 360 and the ease which it can developed for. He often mentions how much work it is to create a title optimised for the PS3 in relation to Microsoft’s behemoth of a console, and he even manages to slip in the “PS3 isn’t selling” argument towards the bitter end. A bit of a moot point when the console is shifting some decent numbers at the moment.
Responses seem to be eager to criticise Booth himself. He does make a few interesting points, though his slightly provocative tone certainly doesn’t encourage debate.

I would be interested to know what he has to say about Oblivion and Dirt both running better on the PS3 than the 360 and about Ratchet & Clank which looks better than anything released on the 360.
In a few years it wont be any more difficult to develop for the PS3 than the 360. The PS2 was also difficult at first but is doesn't matter in the long term.
If he were making these points in a sensible manner you could be forgiven for thinking he might be on to something but he isn't. He is obviously either a complete c**t or on Microsofts payroll.

I think the better question is why would anyone listen to someone who made guitar hero about shaders and rendering?
And to the author, you need to learn how to spell, it's: Ridicules, not redicules

The system has a 3.4 ghz processor in it. It is more difficult to program for but you can do a lot more with it if you work on it. You cant skip out on detail when programming for the ps3 a lot of developers are figuring this out and they are concerned about there raw talent. I would be as well.

Yeah agreed, if this guy actually made a game I gave two s***s about, then maybe...just maybe I'd be bummed. But the fact of the matter is, MGS4 is still being released on PS3 exclusively (sans whining), Killzone 2 is still being released exclusively on the PS3 (sans whining), Haze, Resistance 2, etc... I mean, come on, maybe he's the 'ex' developer, because he sucks at it? lol

The PS3 blows away 360. This guy obviously smokes crack.

The part that was the most BS on this is when he said blu-ray was read slower than DVD.
Both have different speeds, i dont remember them but i think blur-ray has a constant read speed all the way through the disk. DVD has a much faster read rate towards the center of the disk, but gets more slower than the blur-ray the further the disk goes out.
so for a massive game. Blu-ray. 4 a small game. DVD simple. if thats how it works neway ( im not sure though sum1 back me up mayb? )

The fact is blu-ray does run at a slower speed- at x2 compared to x8 with must DVD players.
And who really knows better about this? A developer or some screaming pre-adolescent fanboy.

You can read the strongly sarcastic tone that was used in the original article. PS3's hardware is a lot more powerful than the xbox 360. I don't know why they're coming back on it, when 100's of gaming sites already did side by side hardware comparisons and all agree that the PS3 is more powerful.
This is the 1st year for the PS3 and I personally think that a console on which I can install Linux... on which i can then install something else... allows me to play pc games, + upgradeable (please do not bring the 360 for the comparison) i could go on for a very long time...
Having said that, the reason why Microsoft has sold more consoles, is because it came out 1 year earlier.
The XboX 360 has great games. Period. But next, come november december, the tide of ps 3 games is coming. As well as computer games, which I will be able to play on my ps3.

This blog cracks me up, it's full of the most clueless idividuals ever.
Take for example, this idiot, who does not realise that Blu-ray speeds and DVD speeds are not comparible.
"The fact is blu-ray does run at a slower speed- at x2 compared to x8 with must DVD players.

Sorry to shatter your fanboy illusions, but the PS3 does 8xDVD, 2xBlu-ray look at the specs if you don't believe me. In addition, Blu-ray uses CAV technology, and 360 uses CLV, which means it's only actually at 8x speed for a very small part of the disc (Blu-ray is constant across the entire surface).
Anyone who believes crap writen in blogs, is a moron.

What does Guitar Hero know about graphics?? When did they last challenge the power of any console as the graphics are cartoony.
Also, if blu ray takes sooooo long to read, at least you will be able to fit a good looking game on there in the future. Already Assassins Creed is having trouble fit the game onto a DVD disc they gonna have multiple game discs by next year probaly!

I have both PS3 and Xbox 360, and yes I am going to sell the PS3 as it is rubbish... all the games have frame rate problems. They seem to be too expensive compared to 360 games and yes I am sorry to say the game load times are shocking.. I was hopeing for something good with the PS3 but it is not there yet. Maybe in a few years and some say 3 years before we see any good games. If you need some prof just look at the MGS4 demo's on the PS3 and then look at COD4 on the xbox, you can see the frame rate problems on MGS4 and COD4 is sooooo smooooth :). I know all you sony fanboys are going to have your say, but deep down you know you backed a looooooser .... Sory lads thats life, you win some and don't :)
