SCEA needs to shed 60GB PS3s before it gets the 40GB, says analyst

ps32.jpgJapan, Europe and Australia have all had theirs, but North America is yet to have its expected 40GB model announced. November is the rumoured date for the official announcement but nothing is confirmed. The US already has an 80GB model in its arsenal so it’s just about possible that Sony hasn’t decided to launch the cut-price model over there, but with the 40GB already causing a healthy stir in Europe that would seem like an oversight.

Wedbush Morgan securities analyst Michael Pachter has been gazing deep into his cup of gaming tealeaves and reckons that there’s a current surplus of 60GB models that still needs to be shifted before the 40GB can arrive. Either that or Sony will have to "accept reality and bundle [the 60GB with] a game and an extra controller for USD 499.99, giving consumers some value for their money."

It’s a fairly cutting assessment but Sony is really going to need to pull something out of the bag to compete in a Xmas that looks increasingly set to be dominated by the Wii and Xbox 360. Still at least the games are starting to flow in a little faster now and certainly there are more than a handful of games due out in time for Chrimbo that should draw in more people’s interest.

Sorry maybe i've missed something but what happens if us release purchasers that's got the full version of the PS3 have an accident with it and have to get it replaced? (assuming like me they've got cover for there £400+ purchase for the next three years) or in the unlikely event (unlike a 360) the system use fails... Will we get a like for like replacement in the future, will we be given a cut down version and told to put up and shut up...(not so much as money back) And if we are will we be give PS2 and PSone as some of us no longer have them as it's not needed with the 60gb version.. I love me current PS3 and treat it so but if it's not to be replaced after a failure then i need to rap it up in cotton wool... Thoughts anyone?

That is a very good question... and I'm not sure what the answer might be. If, as you say, you're 60GB broke and they've stopped making them you'd want an 80GB, but seeing as that model is unavailable, I'm not sure how that would work. Sony must be very confident they aren't going to break, or at least not in a way that would require a direct replacement.

=====

Sony have seriously ballsed up here in the UK with the 40GB entry. I have seen three top 10 charts for the last week's UK sales in the PS3 category. All three have the new lower-priced 60GB console at #1 after months in which the chart never contained a console at all, only games and peripherals; but none have the lower-priced 40GB in the list at all!

People just wanted a cheaper 60GB unit; they have no interest whatsoever in a smaller hard drive with no BC and fewer connections.

Oops......
