More reasons for a £299 PS3
Whether or not the rumours and speculation are proved correct, the concept of a £299 / $399 PS3 seems to have captured a deal of attention from the interwebs. More and more gaming blogs are joining the fray to add their two penny’s worth on why the launch of a lower priced SKU seems inevitable in the run up to the Xmas period. Real Deal Gaming has put together two compelling reasons for such a move and highlighted some intriguing statements from Sony that might be subtly pointing towards the launch of a new cheaper model on October 30th.
The first reason is pretty straightforward: Spiderman 3 makes its Blu-ray debut on the 30th. Until Halo 3 came out, Spidey was holding an impressive record for its opening weekend sales, so Sony has good reason to expect it to do well once it hits the shops. On the flipside, viewers that attended the opening weekend showings might have by now worked out that the film was just an over-long, over-hyped, self-congratulatory CGI fest plagued by a nonsensical, vomit-inducing storyline. But hey, probably not.
Second reason: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction’s inexplicable week long delay, which puts its release on – oh look – October 30th. The R&C series is a Sony stalwart and has historically received an enviably stable, circa 90% set of review scores. It might not be a Halo 3 killer, but it should prove to be the kind of foundation a console can be built on, unlike the more shaky third party titles currently on the PS3.
And if the these two titles weren’t eligible enough in their own right for a console bundle, SCE President Kaz Hirai has recently been talking up the “balancing act” of selling the PS3 as a home-media-centre-come-Blu-ray-player-come-games-console. Combining a killer Blu-ray title with a killer game at a killer price sounds like just the sort of strategy Sony should be using to shift consoles this Holiday period.
Be sure to read the full post for all the evidence. The only thing we have to add is that it seems like October 12th would be almost the perfect time to announce just such a new lower priced SKU…
