Double blow for The Orange Box PS3

Valve can’t be arsed with it, EA seems to be making a pig’s ear of the port and, just to make matters worse, Xbox LIVE will be getting a demo in about half an hour. Because those seventeen people who haven’t already bought might need more persuasion than all those perfect review scores.

All in all, things are looking pretty grim for the PS3 version. 1UP’s recent preview is particularly cutting, revealing some staggering consistency problems in the game’s framerate, which apparently is only meant to be running at a pathetic 30fps anyway. The blame for this – possibly unfairly – is going to fall on EA’s shoulders. Valve palmed off the PS3 development to an internal EA team at an early stage so that it could concentrate on the more directly compatible 360 version.

The game is supposed to be landing in December, which leaves very little time to finish ironing out all the bugs before final release. I guess we’ve all learned that the PS3 just wasn’t made to support three year old PC gaming technology. Who’d have guessed? The only silver lining in this cloud is that Portal seems to be working fine, which is almost reason enough in itself to buy the 5-in-1 box pack. If Team Fortress 2 has also overcome the technical hurdles then you could probably live without experiencing all of Gordon Freeman’s mute antics and would still be getting some good value for money.

But recent multiplatform successes like Call of Duty 4 and Assassin’s Creed surely mean we shouldn’t have to put up with second rate Xbox 360 hand-me-downs any more. I’d advocate a boycott, but then I’ve bought The Orange Box on PC, meaning I’ve now paid for two copies of Half-Life 2, so I’m very much Valve’s bitch already.

Errm, the 360 version also runs at 30FPS...

Oh dear, you made yourself look like clueless idiotic Xbots...

The 360 version also runs at 30FPS..

dfdsf: "The 360 version also runs at 30FPS.." Agh, my mistake. Still, that's not very impressive for either system then.

Mark: Not sure how that makes me an Xbot though - possibly a PCbot ;)

The point is, the game only has to run at 30fps and it still struggles!

P.S. calling somebody an Xbot for reporting news that you didn't want to hear (on a PS3 site no less) surely makes you a PS3bot or MS hater or whatever you crazy fanboy kids call each other these days.

Lets just say EA sucks. They port crap, they show no care for anything but money in the games they release; look at Madden the last, say 4 years or so. If the NFL had not sold them the rights there would actually be a good football game out.

You really can not expect much frome EA, wait until those of you who like G hero and rock band see what EA dose to those franchises when they push Harmonix out

EA has done nothing but impede PS3 sales for their software by constantly releasing inferior games compared to the equivalent 360 versions. I'm sure because of this sequels will be limited to the 360 due to the fact fewer PS3 versions sold. Big mistake EA since PS3 is being adopted now by every studio as an equal if not the superior platform. Ea seems to only support MS. They diss the Wii and the PS3.

Please Sonyfan boys, wake up! You know this was a senseless article. Orange box has been out of the 360 for a while now, you guys didn't get Rainbow Six: Vegas until MONTHS after the X360 version. Yes, I own both a X360 & PS3. I haven't been happy with the PS3. So boo-hoo while I play Mass Effect, Bioshock, & Halo 3.

You do have unreal tourney 3 good job.. epic said many moons ago that they didnt want to release on the 360 yet cause halo 3 would block the sales of it.. so 360 will get it ...

Not only that how can anyone talk bad about half life 1 -2 ep1 or ep2 it is.. like umm ... the best game ever...

This guy who wrote this article is dumb.

Iam not afraid to be called a fan boy or what ever the hell u kids call people these days. First off EA pumps out shitty games all the time, and no one does anything about it. I also blame valve for not being able to port a game that can be ran on an original xbox(hl2). Any body recall playing it on xbox I mean it ran pretty smoothly not the best. I think cod4 being perfectly ported to ps3 says alot about the ps3 being easy to port for. Take the time to learn the system you lazy computer nerds, because whether u like the system or not others do.

Ea is to blame for this they are so stupid they can 't develop activision, ubisoft, and every other major developer and publisher can develop great for the ps3 but EA cannot they are stupid.

If Valve couldn't be arsed to make sure the game was turning out the same as the 360 version, and just kind of neglected it. Then I can't be arsed to buy it!

ATTENTION ALL PS3 OWNERS: I am calling for a Boycott of the game "The Orange Box".

The game will run at a pathetic 30 frames per second. Valve team dumped the PS3 development off on an internal EA development team so Valve could focus on the Xbox360 version. Gabe Newell hates the PS3. He's been killing the Sony console all year in the media. They obviously don't care about the PS3 and the quality of the product that they give PS3 owners.

I can't put all the blame on Valve. EA needs to take some of the heat for this as well. They gave us a disgusting excuse for a game in Madden 08. Another 30fps disaster.

All PS3 owners need to unite on this. If we don't, it will never end. Gabe Newell needs to get hit in the pockets. Boycott "The Orange Box"! Do NOT buy anything that Gabe Newell is a part of. He is cheating his art and he is cheating PS3 owners. Let's show Gabe Newell, Valve & EA that we do matter. We are the only reason that game companies exist. If we stop buying crap, they will stop making crap.

Don't give your money to people that don't care about you! Boycott The Orange Box!

Thanks, Superdynamite

Wasnt there news recently of MS execs taking jobs at EA? Hardly surprising then that they are consistently screwing up PS3 ports and not bothering. There are some games that are out for both 360 and PS3 that are better on the PS3 so this is just lazy development by a company that produces the same games year after year. If they've really screwed this version up then there are no excuses for it. Won't they be investigated/fined?

Ports from EA have never been good, especially
since Peter Moore has been one of their employee.
Could he be behind those tiny but scratchy (and
growing) problems Sony has with EA ? Sounds like
a conspiracy theory to me, yes, but what if it's
true ?

Just a heads up, CoD4 was not ported to the PS3. Development for all platforms took place at the same time, side-by-side.
Basically there was no porting involved. It was built from the ground up for each respective system.
