Naughty Dog eager to bring Jak and Daxter back on PS3 – do we really need more endless sequels?

Evan Wells, co-president of Naughty Dog, is out doing the interview rounds in the run up to the launch of potential PS3 saviour, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. He has been echoing the sentiment of fellow co-president, Christophe Balestra, and says it is hard to imagine what the game might have been like without the PS3’s unique hardware and architecture.

Fans of the Jak and Daxter PS2 platformers will be pleased to hear that Naughty Dog is eager to get cracking on the next project now that Uncharted has gone gold, and Wells reveals that a large number of the team would like to bring the series to the PS3. Nothing is set in stone, but it would be surprising if Sony wasn’t seriously considering a next-gen return for the duo.

It hasn’t always translated into particular stellar sales figures, but Sony has done a decent job so far of pushing new IPs on the new platform. Games like Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk and Lair have been some of the most hyped titles on the console and though there have been serious disappointments *cough Lair *cough*, at least we haven’t been treading the same old ground that we did on the PS2.

Now, it’s all about to change. Most original ideas have been gunning for the Xmas 2007 launch window, leaving the big name line-up for 2008 reading like the shipping forecast: Grand Theft Auto IV, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Devil May Cry 4, Fallout 3, etc, etc. Okay, there’s a clear financial motivation for shipping long-running franchises and more than a few of those mentioned are genuinely worth getting excited about, but it would be a shame to miss out on some original thinking just to keep plugging games we already recognise.

Do we really need a Jak 4, or any other sequel to a tired out series to carry the console along? Share your thoughts with us.
