PS3 'exclusive' Fatal Inertia at top speed for a spring 2008 release, as 'Unreal Engine excuse' loses pace
PlayStation gamers with their wits about them might remember the news of a rather exciting looking PS3 launch title from Koei that was also set to be a system exclusive. That was Fatal Inertia, a game that game out on the 360 weeks ago, that still hasn’t appeared on the PS3 since it disappeared from sight. Well, the folks over at 1-Up have revealed that Koei are expecting a 2008 release around springtime, which is far more detailed than any of the publisher's previous annoucements, which hadpointed vaguely to sometime by the end of next year. The delay is apparently due to difficulties with Fatal Inertia’s use of Epic Games’ infamous game engine Unreal Engine 3. However, with Unreal Tournament for the PlayStation 3 now completed, the various games developers sighting Unreal Engine 3’s apparent incompatibility with the PS3 as a reason for a delayed release should be able to call in a little assistance.
On the 360, Fatal Inertia was an underrated little futuristic racer, which was a pleasure to play to completion. It took the basic formula of Wipeout to a rather more open environment that looked very much like it could have been from a planet close to the world of Halo, and it was pretty damn good. It also looks rather pretty on the PS3, and while it has little chance of pinching Wipeout’s crown, it might be worth a sideways glance when it does actually release.
