Rat Race writer explains why the first trailers sucked
When the concept was first rolled out, Rat Race seemed promising – an episodic content model for PSN, a team of professional comedy writers, a new sitcom approach to gaming… There’s been a serious lack of humorous, whimsical titles since LucasArts decided to stop being creative and throw all its weight behind endless Star Wars franchises. This could have been a chance to put comedy games back on the map. So it was a real disaster when the first snippets arrived revealing a crushing lack of laughs. Head writer and stand-up comic (I won’t curse him with the cringe-worthy ‘funnyman’ label just yet), Victor Varnado, has been doing a bit of back-peddling in a recent interview with MTV.
"Here's what really happened," said Varnado, "Some of the stuff that was leaked onto GameTrailers was some of the stuff meant for internal use, not something that was a finished product that would go out." “That isn’t putting our best foot forward,” he admitted.
Forgive my own dreadful pun, but this smells distinctly of rat. Even if these clips weren’t supposed to be put under the scrutiny of the critical public eye, why was this selection of humourless dross being circulated around the Super-Ego Games offices? Surely it wasn’t meant to inspire them?
On the plus side, at least the backlash might have given them a good reason to go back to the drawing board, rethink why the first clips bombed (with the possible exception of ‘The Slaughter Promo’) and flush out the other potential train-wrecks in time for the final release. Even so, it will be a challenge to shift that unfortunate first impression.
