Rock Band incompatible with Guitar Hero III’s Les Paul controllers, Harmonix won’t fix it either

The titanic clash of the guitar rhythm games is getting a little nastier in the wake of news that Red Octane’s Guitar Hero III Les Paul controllers will not work with Harmonix’s rival title Rock Band. Obviously if you’re prepared to go all out and by the full blown Rock Band special edition, you’ve got more than enough guitars to satisfy your needs, however if you were wanting to team up for 2 player lead and bass guitar action using the Gibson Les Paul, then you’re fresh out of luck (not to mention, out of pocket).

Ironically, it appears that the Guitar Hero II controllers do work for the less exciting task of menu navigation within Rock Band, but they won’t let you actually play. Now, you’d be forgiven for thinking that all EA / Harmonix would need to do is apply a small software patch to solve the problem, but that just ain’t going to happen. “If a 3rd party guitar / music game does not support the Rock Band guitar controller, questions regarding this should be directed to the game manufacturer,” reads a Harmonix statement.

That means that there is one possible solution to the problem, if Red Octane is able to apply a patch to its wireless guitar firmware. That might seem particularly daft given that it would only affect users wanting to play the rival game, but assuming that Rock Band’s guitar does work with Guitar Hero, an update might dissuade players from buying Harmonix’s peripherals instead. I guess it’s down to how much the company makes on each peripheral sold.
