The rise of the all-powerful PS3 now begins, as US sales rise almost 300%

PS3_VertUp.jpgAfter the recent news that PS3’s actually outsold the Wii in Japan for two weeks, it has now emerged that the console has enjoyed a 298% rise in sales in the States in since the beginning of this month. Over at Gamesindustry.biz, they’re attributing the news to the introduction of the 40Gb and 80Gb models, and while that’s true, perhaps it’s actually just a sign that the dawn of PlayStation3 as the all powerful king of the consoles is now beginning.

Only a couple of weeks ago Sony CEO Howard Stringer was predicting something of a coming-of-age for the PlayStation3, pointing to the PlayStation2’s rather slow start. Well, it seems he might just have known what he was talking about. Just like the PlayStation2 at this time in its lifecycle, the PlayStation3 has just left behind a few too many months of underperforming software, to suddenly begin to look like it could win the console war. With plenty of must-have games recently out or on the radar, just maybe the PS3 will actually become, well, the next PS2.

Signs are good, but I think it's still a bit early to be calling the war over. PS3 has alot of ground to make up right now, of course, if they can lure in the PS2 base when all the exclusives start hitting...well, then yeah, the war'll be over.
