3D Realms has a little Xmas prezzie for all you Duke fans out there – a teaser trailer of the ‘new’ Duke Nukem Forever game. DNF has been celebrated and lamented for being the most vapouriffic of vapourware in the history of gaming. Its first announcement was made over TEN YEARS AGO and has not only failed to see the light of day in all that time, but it has only had occasional screenshots aired from time to time just to keep reminding us that 3D Realms is still working on the game.

As the developer is keen to point out, this is little more than teaser (and it was only whipped up for their Christmas party); so there won’t be anything resembling in-game footage which leaves us still a little sceptical about the prospects of this title ever actually making it to being a full blown game. However, over the last year at least, the DNF teams has been adding new members, so maybe this time, something tangible will come out of it.

While it would be great to have DNF arrive at long last, it is going to be harder pushed than ever before to live up to its own hype. Such a long time waiting has undoubtedly built player expectations to ridiculous levels, but more importantly, its long absence has made room for tons of other generic alien shooters to make their mark. And there wasn’t much shortage of them in the first place. There’s definitely an appeal in returning to old franchises, but even so the muscle-bound bad ass shooting at nasty extraterrestrials is one genre that’s starting to feel really tired. I really hope that 3D Realms still has something new to bring to the table.

Presumably, such a long development time has won the game a pretty hefty development cost so it would be fairy safe to assume that the game would be gunning for a multiplatform release to rake some cash back.
