Oof. 1.2 million PS3s fly off the shelves in the run up to Christmas in Europe
It’s been announced that Sony sold a ‘record amount’ of PS3s over the run-up to Christmas 2007 in Europe, with 1.2 million consoles flying off the shelves and under consumers newly purchased HD-ready TVs.
We’ve already informed you of the 4 million consoles that Sony managed to shift in the US over Christmas – 1.3 million of which were PS3s – and the incredible rise of the PSP sales figures in Japan over the last few months.
So on the one hand, Sony seem to be on the up and up. Consoles are shifting, and with the recently introduced PS3 ‘pick n mix’ bundle apparently doing decent figures at retail already, it does hint to the PS3 finally starting to get to the forefront of the modern gamers imagination.
But, that original target of 11 million PS3 units shipped by the end of March seems to have tweaked to a much lower 8 million, which is an obvious step downwards for Sony. Plus, when put in comparison with the alleged 19 million Wii’s which will go by the end of the financial year, and the 9.1 million Xbox 360s, it does show that Sony still have a little way to go before they start to catch up in earnest.
