Rumour: New 100GB+ model to replace 80GB model when it phases out

ps32.jpgThe last of the US’ backwards compatible PS3 models might be facing the axe very soon if rumours are to be believed. But Sony isn’t abandoning its two-console market strategy completely like it has done over here. More leaked insider information, broken by Ars Technica, suggests that a whole new model – one better equipped to deal with the space demands of the serious Home Media Server user – is due to step in and take its place.

It is claimed that the new model will sport either a 120GB or 160GB hard drive and the latest DualShock 3 controller.

This certainly makes a lot of sense – it might be incredibly easy to swap a new hard drive into your PS3, but larger capacity models will help keep the Xbox 360 Elite on its toes. It is also logical for Sony to start including its new rumblin’ control pads inside hardware bundles. There are a few important questions remaining though: how much will the new model cost? Will the 40GB be getting a further price reduction, or will it be upgraded to include the new Dual Shock 3 controllers? And, most importantly, when are ours coming to the UK? As soon as we find out, we’ll let you know.

Update: Sony has been telling various websites that it isn't planning to bring anything of the kind to Europe. Which really means very little when you think about all the rumours that get denied all the time. However, even with only a single SKU Sony seems to be doing well in Europe, which doesn't add much hope of an upgrade anytime soon. Mind you, something will need a change when the Dual Shock 3s eventually make it over here.
