Sony admits surprise at recent surge in PSN usage

SCEE boss David Reeves has yet more cause for celebration this week as he reveals that the PlayStation Network has enjoyed a massive surge in usage after the Christmas sales boom. “One thing that has surprised us is in the Network purchases and the general level of interest that has been shown around the Network business" revealed Reeves.

Apart from the fact that ‘surprise’ and ‘network traffic’ are seldom comfortable bed partners (which Microsoft learned this Xmas), the boost to the amount of digital revenue – which Reeves claims has shot form almost nothing to “double-digit millions” – is definitely good news for PS3 gamers. The more sweet cash-money to be made on PSN means all the more encouragement for developers to make decent PSN games. A few more like Everyday Shooter and PixelJunk Monsters certainly wouldn’t go amiss.

If you’re interested in the stats, around 40% of PS3 users are now taking advantage of the free network service and have accumulated some 33 million downloads. Sony is expecting a further leap in usage when Home launches, but with news on the intriguing online virtual world staying quiet for a long while now, I’m becoming a little dubious about how much impact it’ll really have when it arrives. It certainly has the novelty value, but will it really engage players fully enough to last the distance?
