Want to play games online? Then don't use Tiscali

cod4.jpgOnline gaming can be tonnes of fun. Managing that last frag, or scoring that last goal with only seconds remaining against a gaming chum can induce the kind of hollers and screams you’d expect to only find upon my discovery of a magazine featuring nothing but nude images of Scarlett Johansson.

But it seems that some users of Tiscali as their ISP are having some major problems enjoying their online gaming goodness. The biggest affected title for PS3 owners is the sublime Call of Duty 4, with horrendous lag and difficulty finding games to join being the main sources of complaint.

It transpires that unlike most ISPs, Tiscali blocks P2P services during peak hours, leaving the likes of Call of Duty 4 that requires P2P for online matchmaking stuck. Other titles such as EVE Online, Enemy Territory: Quake Was and Team Fortress 2 seem to also be major problems for Tiscali.

From a personal stand point (I’ve utilised Tiscali for my home broadband service for 3 years now) I’ve yet to see any of these troubles. Though I’ve had difficulty in the past, Tiscali have always seemed eager to help. But, the fact that there’s a 41 page thread on the official Tiscali forums on the subject, with thousands proclaiming that they’re suffering from the aforementioned problems is a large, erm, problem for the company.
