EA expects PS3 to outsell Xbox 360 this year, admits still finding platform “challenging”
EA has been amassing financial analyses, checking the sheep entrails and consulting with its dark overlords in order to gauge which console is going to be crowned winner of 2008. Needless to say, the Wii is on top, but we’re going to ignore that for the moment because it’s a Fisher Price toy (I kid, I kid) and focus on the far more engaging tale of how the PS3 is all set to hand the Xbox 360 its arse.
According to EA’s figures, Europe is the main battleground and we’re expected to be picking up to 6 million PS3s over the year – a significant leap from 2007’s 1.5-2.5 million for the region. In the US, things aren’t looking quite as peachy, because EA reckons that the PS3 and Xbox 360 will sell at about the same pace, but that does leave Sony’s platform with an overall lead.
Arguably, whatever figures EA decides to pull out of thin air make decidedly little difference in the grand scheme of things and definitely doesn’t guarantee the PS3 any such victory. However, EA is going to be basing its strategy for the year on these predictions and a PS3 lead means more incentive for EA to spend time getting the games working properly on the platform – something that it failed spectacularly to do on a number of occasions back in 2007 *cough* Madden NFL 08 *cough*.
EA boss John Riccitiello also recently admitted that the company hasn’t been having the best of time getting to grips with Sony’s hardware. Although it has been happy with the recent Burnout release, it looks like it will increasingly be adopting the PS3 as a lead development platform in order to avoid delays and sub-standard porting. The pressure is on Army of Two to not suck completely then. Oh dear.
