Halloween launch for EA's Dead Space
EA’s Dead Space is a game so spine chillingly terrifying that rumours say it won’t even have a pause button. Surely something so fear inducing can’t really be allowed to light of day? Yes it can, and will - on October 31st, aka Halloween – the time of year when it is traditional to combine cheap frights with an abundance of tooth-decaying confectionary – we’ll be seeing Dead Space hit the shelves.
There’s plenty of reason to be cynical; from what we’ve seen so far, Dead Space is little more than a carbon copy haunted house in space title. Something like that can never hope to top the unbridled terror elicited by something cerebral like System Shock 2. But then I will admit that I actually really, really like carbon copy haunted house in space titles and there’s a lot of potential in its zero gravity mechanic. The graphics are also pretty nice, but the monsters which look like they were ripped right out of The Thing need some work.
To celebrate the release date announcement, EA has opened up a redesigned and relaunched website for the game. I’d tell you all about it but for the fact I miss clicked the age verification year and now it keeps telling me I’m not old enough to view the site. I could open a new browser or have a look on my laptop or something I suppose, but I’ll be damned before I bend over backwards just for because EA is overzealous with its website cookies.
Allow me to have a guess instead: it’s a heavily flash laden affair with a sort of eerie background music that has you scrabbling instantly to find the mute button. Content wise there’s a couple of snippets of loosely plot related nonsense that carefully ‘sets the scene’ but gives nothing away about who you are, why you’re there and what you’re supposed to be doing. There’s a few screenshots showing off the game taken in new pitch darkness and from a crazy angle, which in turn reflect nothing about the game content because it’s still far too early for anything vaguely final to have emerged. How close was I?
