It’s been a good couple of months for Sony, and if recent rumours are to be believed the resurgent behemoth is looking to celebrate its success by following Apple’s lead and entering the mobile phone market. The news arrives, incidentally, amidst equally flaky speculation that Apple might be on the verge of making its own handheld console.

For those of you new to the loop, the existence of the Playstation phone has been hinted at and repudiated several times already, but a couple of days ago the rumour mill started grinding after somebody found mention of the device in a box-out in Sony Magazine.

The picture above is the most recent development, and, alas, a mock-up. A fake. A phoney. The Playstation phone may or may not be coming, but it almost certainly won’t look like this.

While we’re on the subject, does anybody really care? Mobile gaming is taking shape, but it can’t be forced in the way Nokia tried to force it with the original N-Gage. If you try to catch two rabbits at the same time, goes the proverb, you’ll catch none, and the Playstation phone sounds like a double rabbit.
