MotorStorm 2 'interactive vegetation', four player split screen announced
After an ultra-exclusive sneakypeak at some upcoming PlayStation 3 project, the Beeb’s Darren Waters has revealed a few new morsels of info about games due out in the Autumn, around Xmas and one due in the long distant future.
Confirming what we already knew to be inevitable, Sony showed off a little bit of MotorStorm 2. This time around the game won’t be set in a desert locale. Instead, it’s going all FarCry on us and opting for a “lush island environment, full of interactive vegetation”.
I hope I’m not alone in being utterly confused by what exactly ‘interactive vegetation’ entails. Right now I’m thinking that maybe the bushes will cry a little when you barrel through them and the trees will hurl insults as you whizz past.
Four-player split screen was also confirmed, which should make some considerably more enjoyable party sessions. The game is due out in time for Xmas.
Resistance 2’s 60 player online mode was revealed again and, as the eyebrows of rival developers have started to raise, hopefully the pressure to follow through with the idea will lead to some truly epic online battles once the game arrives around September time.
Of course, the really intriguing part of the post is the bit that reads:
“So what else was I shown? Well, I was shown a trailer for a game not due out till 2009 but was sworn to absolute secrecy. I don't mean to be a tease - all I can say is that I was left speechless. If the footage I was shown truly is "in game", as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.”
Christ, that doesn’t leave a lot to go on does it? I’d like to say God of War 3, but I’m not convinced that ‘story-telling and immersion’ are what defines those games. From a technological standpoint, the fact that Darren applauds the footage specifically implies a graphical marvel rather than, for example, a gigantic online world (which tread on to Home’s turf anyway), and the very best graphics tend to come from the action titles.
If there’s one game that has already pushed the boat out graphically and in terms of ‘story-telling and immersion’, it’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Could this be Uncharted 2 we’re talking about here then? We all know that is going to happen and 2009 seems a plausible time frame, but then it’s not a gigantic secret either. I’m guessing this must be a whole new IP entirely.
What do you guys think – we’d love to hear some ideas.
To get the ball rolling, I’m going to suggest that it’s not a action game or an FPS, but rather something more like a god game. Considering all the hype around Will Wright’s Spore, it really isn’t far fetched to consider that there might be a potential rival in the works. I assume that this one would have more of a focus on narrative than strategies. Just a wild stab in the dark – I hope we all get to have a good laugh at how wide off the mark I am in the very near future.
