PS2 on life support - one year to go til the old fella's taken round the back

ps2-photo.jpgThe good old PS2 seems to be in the final throws of life, with SCEA (that’s Australia, not America) Managing Director Michael Ephraim admitting that they will only be supporting PS2 for another “full year.”

“We still have a number that is rather bullish, we're not backing off on hardware and we think the software tail will be very strong.” Said Ephraim, with regards to the PS2.

Blatantly the PS2 isn’t all set to disappear off the shop shelves anytime soon. Almost every store still has a huge PS2 section, normally one which massively outnumbers the PS3 section in terms of shelf space given. The systems cheap, as are an incredible number of stupendously brilliant games. And prices will only continue to drop as the PS3 starts to firmly take over.

For Sony however, as fantastic as the huge userbase of PS2 owners is, their minds are obviously focussing on the potential of the PS3. If you’re Mr Sony, would you rather gamers we’re spending a few token quid every now and again on a handful of old PS2 classics? Or would you be much happier with them shelling out £40-£50 on every major new PS3 release?
