Sony to offer PS2 game downloads via PSN to replace backwards compatibility?
With backwards compatibility unceremoniously dropped from the PS3 with the introduction of the 40GB console, in the latest issue of EGM, Playstation Network director Eric Lempell admitted that there are “possibilities” that Sony will allow gamers to purchase and download PS2 titles via the PSN.
Lempel said "We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles," when asked about the possibility by the American magazine, obviously stoking the fires, and letting rumours run free.
As an idea – obviously nabbed from Microsoft and their Xbox Classics – it makes perfect sense. Allow PS3 owners to download the best that the PS2 had to offer for a few quid each, and we’ll all be nice and a happy folks.
But, how keen will people be to download versions of games that they already own physical copies of, and shelled out big bucks for not so long ago? Are we expected to purchase all our favourites yet again if we haven’t the space to keep the PS2 sat under the TV? Sounds like a nice way to extract some extra cash to me.

Sony would be stupid to completely scrap BC, I think they had to dump it for now to lower the price of the PS3 to push more units, once things have settled I'm sure it will make a come back.
The reason why it will come back is because not only is there money to be made, well that's it isn't it? there's money to be made, they just need to get the PS3 on its feet, which they've done and will continue to do.
It would be awesome if they can get it back in before 2009, for example, God of War 3 is due out sometime then, how cool would it be to download God of War 1 and 2 onto your PS3, play through those and then buy GoW3, to cool.
I'm sure BC is on the boards, again they just needed to get the PS3 into more homes, I hope they lower the price again before GTA4 hits, now that would be nice.

john: I'll refrain from responding to your abuse. Thanks for that.
G-s: If you own a 40GB PS3, you cant play your favourite PS2 titles on the newer system. So, unless you want to unpack your PS2 every time you wish to play it, you'll need to buy the same game again to play on your PS3.

Sony is a sucker for their customers. If the customers want it they'll put it in. Just look at the in game XMB thing, at the customer's request, Sony will most likely put it in. Sony will use firmware updates to put at least limited bc in.
